Volcan Fuego blows!

In volcano’s wake, Guatemalan town became a cemetery

About 27 miles from Guatemala city, volcan Fuego erupted covering communities and killing at least 110 people. with over 200 still missing.  The Pyroclastic flow of lava, gases, boulders and ashes came down so suddenly, some were covered, still in their homes.

Guatemala city La Aurora airport was closed for cleanup for the next day,
and there was still ash in the air for several days.. It was tragic for several villages below where excavation was impossible.

Many families were lost and grieving the loss of loved ones.. One Guatemalan woman explained she and her two children were trapped with the volcanic mud was filling their home.. They called the father and told him goodbye as the rooms filled and became like cement.  they escaped to the bedroom as the next room filled to the ceiling, then watched in horror as the mud rose to the bed they were standing on .. all of a sudden it stopped, and they felt very blessed to receive only minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Most people cannot rebuild as the homes are now cement like mud, rocks and deep  volcanic ash.. But, neighbors are beginning to help neighbors and over 3,000 were evacuated to nearby churches and places set up to provide shelter, clean water, food and clothing.. Many stories of similar milagras, (miracles) happened where lives were spared and Guatemalans are pulling together,  as some communities were totally buried.

the Guatemala city airport was closed for a day to clean up ash from the runway.. Many volunteers helped clean and provide meals and water,  with the survivors located at Esquintla area.  So many grieving and devastated with their losses..

It makes us grateful for the Restoration of the gospel, knowing that whatever our path may be, and whatever storms or disasters lie ahead,  that we cannot live in fear, but with faith, knowing that our souls and our bodies resurrected and we will be able to live again eternally with loved ones, having faith in Christ as our Savior and Redeemer…

Raising Our Hands to Sustain Is Also a Promise to “Do Our Part”

Members of the Church raise their hands to sustain the new First Presidency of the Church, President Russell M. Nelson and his counselors, President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring during a solemn assembly during the Saturday morning session of general conference on March 31, 2018.

I like to picture us in the pre-existance, before the world was, raising our hands (like the picture above), and promising to come down and do our part, with the blessings and talents we have been given, to share with our brothers and sisters here on the earth.–.then the veil was placed over our eyes so we could be tested..and we know none of us are perfect here on earth;  its a school and we are still learning and growing and learning to love each other and forgive our petty differences..

I am proud to be a full-time missionary, doing mental health counseling, for ¨La Iglesias De JESUCRISTO De Los Santos De Los Ultimos Dias¨.  We are so blessed to have a modern day prophet who guides us in changing times. Just like the prophets of old, in the bible, our prophet still talks with, and receives revelation from God the Father, through El Espirtu Santos.. and yes, we do hold Jesus Christ at the head of the Restored gospel, with all restored ordinances of the holy Priesthood.  Christ, our elder brother, helped create this world and all that is within it, under the direction of God the Father, and He was chosen, before the world was, to be the Redeemer and our Savior, in the war in heaven, that is now raging on our very earth.

I was watching a movie of a priest of another church struggle whether or not to believe that every one is resurrected, through Christ, versus the black and white (heaven or hell, if they had not been ¨saved¨). but, we believe it is not just a one-time incident of being saved or resurrected, .. ultimately it is up to each of us to listen to His voice and choose, to learn, and continue to live His commandments, and become like Him, and be able to return to live with Him, and be together as families ..

Because of this knowledge, I do not fear death, and had literal peace when my father told the nurses, ¨I am ready to meet my Maker¨, you can disconnect all these tubes, and his face shone with pure faith and love for His Savior, and he knew that was just a temporary body that had cancer, and that he would be made whole in body, mind and spirit, through the resurrection of our Savior. He was at peace, what a great example!

Do we NEED a prophet today?  Yes, just like some of the populations that had become wicked and pulled away from God anciently, in the scriptures, we can look at the news and realize, much of our government is corrupt, as well as other areas in the media, and Satan is truly fighting to tempt our youth,  as he knows he is against powerful forces with strong men and women who honor God, who choose to be different, who choose to keep commandments and try to live pure lives, and be worthy of the blessings that await the faithful to the end.

As I get older, and realize, that someday i will temporarily say goodbye for a time to my children and grandchildren, I truly hope and pray that they knew what their mother, and grandmother stood for.. That they know I testify of Christ, and of the Restored Gospel, that I cannot deny the spirit that burns within me, and that I will be always praying for them to stay true to who they are, and what they have been taught, as the world continues to get darker..  But, in some ways lighter as well, my friends.  There are also many wonderful amazing things happening in our world, more knowledge and discovery, more technology, speed of travel, and the ability of our young people to do amazing things with their lives, and the gospel rolls forth across the earth..

What matters most becomes more vivid as we age, and realize we cannot take material things with us.. money, looks, prestige, power, praise of men, –it becomes unimportant compared to our relationship with our Father in Heaven and our Savior.. and being able to look them in the face and feel their love and know our lives are acceptable, that we served where we could. and put God first, and did not heed the mocking or shaming of many.  That we stood against the addictions that plague many of our friends and loved ones.

It is no accident that many temples are being built across the world, in which to fulfill God´s sacred ordinances..I am literally overwhelmed to tears at times when I stand in this holy temple in Guatemala and serve one day a week as an Ordinance worker, and continue to learn..  I am also impressed with these young missionaries who leave everything to serve their fellowman, and give 18 months to 2 years unselfishly and share the love of Christ across this land.. I am so proud of my grandson Ethan who is now serving in Thailand.. The scriptures predict that the God´s word will be spread across the land in many tongues, preparing for the second coming of the Savior of the world.  (He loves all of us) a childhood song came into my mind today.. from years ago.. ¨yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, the bible tells me so¨..  If we can have the faith of a mustard seed,  of a little child..We can start there, and ask God´s forgiveness, because we all have something we can repent of to be more Christlike..(in thoughts and actions).

I love you, and testify of our Savior Jesus Christ, and the importance of listening to a prophets voice, for our direction, then using our own prayers for personal guidance as well, and being true to the faith, as there are many individual ways to serve Him..

Hermana George in Guatemala

¨BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN GIVEN MUCH….

I too must give¨…(This song rings in my mind).

Being a missionary in Guatemala is a special privilege and I have learned to love this people, the simplicity, the gentle climate, learning to speak the Spanish language, and serving the Missionaries of Central America as AMHA.  Area Mental Health Advisor.

Every time I am asked to call and speak with a missionary, I am humbled by their faith, their testimonies, their love for our Savior, and most of all for their desire to be obedient, to do their best at following the Commandments, reading their scriptures, and seeking out those who are ready to listen, and being worthy to receive ¨El Espiritu Santo¨,  to assist in knowing what to say, to share the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ in these Latter Days..

Recently I was asked to speak with an elder from Guatemala who spoke little English, but with my limited Spanish, and my Iphone translation,  we got along fine, and shared a special hour together.  He told me of his struggles as a child, being raised basically without parents, or a stable home life, being passed around into at least 7 different homes, often without much food or comforts. He was not asking for sympathy, he had been told he had bipolar disorder, and he wanted to understand why he was having disagreements, and bad feelings/interactions with others and lived in continuous fear.  After speaking with him, I doubted that he was bipolar, .. rather, I found that many of his angry reactions came from feeling defensive and devalued.  He had learned to survive the only way he knew how, did not bond well, and had difficulty trusting that anyone was truly there in his life to love and accept him unconditionally.  I think he has a lot of PTSD left from life experiences.  He finally had found the gospel through a good friend, saw something that gave him hope, (Esperanza) and developed great faith, to learn to work, and not get into trouble, not steal, but be self sufficient, which there are not as many opportunities to do, when you are an unskilled disadvantaged worker here in Central America. For this young man, going on an LDS mission is a huge step and his life will be blessed as well as him helping many others.

I empathized with him, but also shared with him Ether 12:27 from the Book of Mormon.

And if men come unto me, i will show unto them their weakness,  God gives man weakness that he may be humble, and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me, for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

As a therapist of many years, I know personally that this is true. We all have weaknesses to overcome.  When we take a habit, or personality trait, a weakness and work on it, we become strong in that area,  and can later use it to help strengthen others, and it helps our confidence in ourselves.

What are each of us doing with our many gifts and talents? We were born with so many and have lived where we could develop others..  Are we using them to assist others, friends, or even strangers?  Do we hide our light under a bushel?  I have to admit, I was guilty of that for many years, being self-centered and not giving even a small percentage of what I could- to share with others. I am not proud of that..

Often we may compare ourselves to others, and of course we come up on the short end because we see others gifts, and our shortcomings. In speaking with one elder who had low self esteem, he said to me one day.. ¨Who am I that I can be telling these people what will make their lives happier?¨  I replied, indeed Elder, WHO are YOU?  You represent Christ and His restored gospel upon the earth today.. If but, not for you many of the people you speak to on the road, or streets of a small city, would never hear of the restored gospel.  YOU hold the Melchizedek Priesthood, restored to the earth by Peter, James and John, the apostles upon whom Christ conferred this Priesthood, in His day before it was taken from the earth, then was restored for our use and to assist building up the kingdom of God, prior to His second coming.

We have been given the power for personal revelation and promptings by the Holy Ghost, after baptism, to guide our lives and testify to us individually the path to follow, right or wrong decisions, as long as we keep ourselves worthy to receive it..  It is a privilege, and a blessing! and is called the Comforter, in times of loss, or pain.

I have had to cling to the Comforter many times throughout my life, through divorce, loss, disappointments, my husband passing, and many other times when I did not know what decision to make.. It has always strengthened me, and helped me get up again..

So, my message is, my friends, my brothers and sisters,  We live in America, and have so many freedoms not even imagined by other peoples of the world. (For instance, I can´t wait to be able to drink again, from my water tap, without buying water, to feel the safety in our communities that most of us enjoy, to walk freely without an armed guard,  even at McDonald´s, to feel that our tax dollars do often count, to have a voice to vote, to choose our education and religious beliefs).

Those of us who already have the gospel in our lives, also share other blessings of the Temple, etc. that we take for granted..having our families be sealed for Eternity, and doing the Sealing ordinances for our ancestors, that is a privilege indeed.

I share my love for you, and pray the Lord´s blessing be with you.

Hermana George in Guatemala.

Are we our brother´s Keeper?

Are we our brother´s keeper?  Do we know that many of our dear ancestors are waiting to have their temple work done?  They have been taught and are asking us from beyond the veil to please have their families sealed together forever.. We may take this for granted if we have been ¨born under the covenant.¨ but we are admonished to do the temple work for our loved ones, and any others that may not have family to do so.

My ancestors crossed the plains, coming from Ireland, England, France, and seeking religious freedoms that we enjoy, often without a thought..and often requests from beyond fall on our deaf ears.. We don´t have to sacrifice cold, starvation, death.. only….   We are asked to listen to the Holy Spirit,  to seek guidance, and to seek diligently to turn the hearts of the children to their fathers.. ..D & C 98:16 .       OUR CHILDREN…

Recently in a devotional by Elder Russel M Nelson and his wife, here in Guatemala at the CCM,  they spoke of missionaries praying to find those who are seeking the gospel,  and also to be mindful that these investigators often have forefathers from beyond the veil, praying earnestly that we will share the gospel with their children and grandchildren, so that they may obtain their ordinances in the restored gospel and be sealed as families.   so, yes, listening to the promptings of the holy spirit are important. Temples are important, and we now have over 150 temples around the world, with many sacrificing their all, to just get to the temple even one time.. I see young Latino missionaries, sometimes the ONLY member in their family, come by themselves, without purse or script, without family support.. and many of our North American elders and sisters come from strong LDS families.. They learn to share with each other, in the love of our Savior, in brotherhood, and serving in the trenches, side by side.  They are valiant warriors saved for these latter days when Satan would have us give in to worldly pleasures, and not believe the teachings of our Fathers.

Please, let´s not waste our gifts, or treat them lightly, we are so fortunate to have the comforts of life, and the abilities we have to serve our Father in Heaven, as well as our families who have gone before us, and there are many ways to do that.   I testify we will be blessed greatly for doing this work, and find such great joy, that earthly or temporal gifts can never compare!  And we CAN have a good influence on our children, by serving where we can, when we can, as often as we can.. love, Hermana George in Guatemalaquezaltenango and Ret 288quezaltenango and Ret 334.JPG

Quezaltenango Temple

Mi compañero y yo visitó el Templo en Quezaltenango, or Xela area.. We loved the mountains surrounding and the cool mountain air.  I never tire of attending the temples and especially listening in Spanish as I am learning more daily.

The people in some of these mountain areas are quite humble and genuine, and there is a feeling of pride in their culture and family lives.  it gets quite cool at night and there is no central heating in most of the homes, so they have small stove where they burn wood.  Our apartment in Guatemala city has no air conditioning or central heating, so we use a small space heater as the tile floors throughout get quite cool.  nice in the summer months.

Me encantó la lluvia, and now are the dry months, but flowers still bloom and fruit still grows on the sidehills.  there is always fresh produce though we have to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly and cannot drink from the tap, so we buy water, or boil it for cooking.  and the missionaries have to take their filtered water bottles with them constantly.  They are offered food from the members at times and are sometimes ill, but in each mission there is a missionary nurse who helps them get the medicines they need.

We also climbed the volcan Pacaya which was an amazing trip and my companion and I are very still and sore today.  i will include pictures.

Every three weeks we get a new batch of missionaries in the CCM, (MTC), about 70-80 plus retain about 25-35 North american missionaries who are still learning Spanish prior to going out into their individual missions. there are now 18 missions in Central America and I am responsible for the reports on all of them, plus making certain mission presidents requests are honored when they need to have counseling for a missionary.  then I speak with our Latino psychologists who do a wonderful job, if they are English speaking then I counsel with them over the phone personally.  a goal i have is to be able to counsel in Spanish one day. I still have a tutor from BYU who skypes me twice per week and we study together, then i study daily as i find an hour here or there..

It is now December and I cannot believe my mission is almost 1/3 over.. as I went to the MTC in provo, Ut. in July 2017.  and finish January 19.2019.  and I know it will go quickly.   Thanks for your prayers and support.  Hermana George in Guatemala.

My mother told us; ¨Jesus was her best friend..¨

I have to admit sadly that I did not fully understand the depth of what she was saying before she passed away, she had been a convert to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,  but I see more each day, just how our Savior wants us to be happy, and forgives us our shortcomings, His love is so great we cannot even imagine.  He already paid the price…

i was speaking on the phone this morning to one of the elders in a mission in Honduras, and he told me how he had come far,  from a weak self-centered missionary almost two years ago, who struggled with depression and some habits that pulled him away spiritually to become the changed happy young man, that he is now.  I asked him what had helped him the most and he said, ¨Finding the rudder for my ship…¨ Setting goals, and finding a direction in which he was committed to go.. (instead of letting the winds blow him to and fro).

Along with that, he developed a plan, a strategy of how to get there, instead of expecting the blessings to just drop in his lap.  In order to overcome discouragement he began to: get up earlier, work harder, pray longer, and listen for answers from the holy Spirit, Personalize the scriptures, exercise daily for fitness, and identify when he was prone to discouragement– how to change directions.  He also began to,  love the Book of Mormon and told me the story of a little boy who could not yet read, but carried the Book of Mormon around and held it close to him, in his pocket.  This elder did the same thing, and in between reading it— that helped his love for the Restored scriptures that he is carrying, and the gospel — to the Mayan people of this area.   When discouraged, he also hummed the primary song, ¨Ïf the Savior stood beside me¨, (would I do the things I do?)¨   This elder brightened my morning, and was a gift to me, today.  El gusto es mio!

As I visited the Iximechi ruins recently, I was alone for a time and quietly I said a little prayer that I would be able to feel the presence of those peoples who had lived under my feet, in those ruins.  Gradually as I walked, the green mounds, and worn ancient stone ruins became alive for me.  They testified of a people who preserved these records, for our time, for our missionaries to carry the words back to their Mayan nation today.

As I counsel, and help those missionaries who are homesick, discouraged, having self-doubt.   I am able to testify to our elders & sisters, that they are doing just that great work, and those words were written not just for our ancient ancestors, but for us today, and to place their names in the scripture and personalize the promises made from God to us.. and realize that Christ also was here, teaching the gospel of truth and light, that we take so much for granted.. (assuming we are in charge, or that our success, our comfortable life, is due to our own luck or hard work)..We forget to thank God.

When actually, we are a part of a larger plan, and we can see that plan more clearly, by doing just as my mother taught, our elder brother, CAN BE, and is our best friend !  Feeling of His love and His spirit, can make us better people, so that when we all come together, and meet these ancestors who lived anciently, beneath this beautiful Central America,– and other places in the world.

We can  also believe, and say,  ¨Jesus Christ is our brother, and our best friend,¨and He can lead us home to our Heavenly Father..

(Thank you my dear mother… )

Personal Fears and Worldwide Devastation

download

As we experience the worldwide devastation recently of hurricanes, earthquakes, loss, flooding, etc. or see pictures, and news headlines, and hear things that cause us stress.

It is easy to become worried and feel vulnerable and helpless.  I would like to share a few things to look for in yourself or your children so hopefully you can withstand the changes and still maintain a healthy emotional balance.  (I´m borrowing some of this from Mental Health news) and adding my own experiences with clients and myself.

  1. Hypervigilance:  survivors of loss, or devastation,  often experience this thing called hypervigilance.  Any little noise causes you to run for cover. A well-meaning, but unexpected touch from a loved one can cause you to yell out in fright. This is because the body is on high alert for another threat to your safety, which may make you feel jumpy and on edge.  It also makes it difficult to relax emotionally, to sleep or to relax your muscles.  Typically, this response goes away on its own, but may be more serious and lasting and develop into some PTSD. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). . .
  2. Anxiety and Depression:  You might lose sleep, become irritable, shaky, lose interest in things, or have difficulty doing your work, staying on task, be more tired than usual. These symptoms may gradually lessen, but if they don,t, its good to talk with those you trust, and if that doesn´t relieve them, please  talk with a counselor.
  3. Shock and Mindblock:  It is also typical for survivors of earthquakes and other natural disasters to continuously relive the event in their head. Something that helps is to have a routine as soon as possible to return to some sense of normalcy as it will help you become more secure in your environment.
  4.  Developing phobias:  phobia or fear,  (this is due to a desire to control the possibility of another disaster occurring).  However, this is obviously out of our control,  and can result in anxiety, extreme vulnerability and helplessness.  I found myself waking in the middle of the night to check earthquake internet sites and check to see if I had missed a big one or could predict, when it would strike again, (and I did not even experience it firsthand,  just felt the rolling sensation, nausea and blinds swinging, then watched the news over and over)

  5.  PTSD:  According to clinical psychologist Dr. Jana Scrivani, Psy.D., who has personally experienced an earthquake herself, “most folks directly impacted will exhibit many psychological symptoms that look like PTSD.” The majority will recover, but “a minority will become stuck, somewhere in the recovery process, and go on to develop PTSD.” Symptoms include intense fear, flashbacks, and nightmares. This is the most severe and lasting psychological effect an earthquake or other devastation may have on an individual. Definitely it is smart to get some counseling if this continues.

Feeling loss is very normal,  loss of safety, loss of life, loved ones , comforts, basic needs,  home, dreams, jobs,  and not knowing what is going to happen or how you will take care of yourself, or your family..It truly CAN be devastating, (even when mixed with a few moments of relief or gratefulness).  Witnessing devastation firsthand, and even on the news can make children as well as adults go through many of the steps described above.  Children may not want to go to school for a while, though it is good to get into a routine, and have some expected place to be, or task to do, so that you have some structure.  Many folks find they have to turn off the news and just deal with local pain and healing.

Grieving also takes time, and comfort, and can often last for months, years even, it is a very individual thing, so be kind to yourself, it is not a sign of weakness.

In working with survivors of loss or pain,  I have learned it is important to be gentle, give yourself and others time, and be patient.  you may have to listen to their stories many times, and let them ¨get it out¨by talking to someone who is empathetic and patient with them.  That´s okay,  and eventually help them recreate a new dream, new goals, while still honoring their loss.  You are not asking them to forget, which becomes a fear after losing something of value..

Since we cannot control nature, we cannot promise something else bad will never happen in our lives..and yes, we all will face illness and death at some point. No, often it does not seem right, or fair, when that happens. God is not punishing us, but yes, the world has moved away from belief in Him and we have become more preoccupied with ourselves, dishonest politics, or even loss of personal integrity, and being prideful at times.   So yes, I feel our world is,  and will be rocky, as God has promised.  We need to relearn how to honor Him, and loving our fellow man, instead of putting ourselves first.

I feel one of the best gifts we can offer our loved ones is resiliency, and strength in a power, higher than our own.  Whatever is comforting and a person can perceive as comfort for themselves.. Objects become less important as we focus on helping and loving others, who feel hopeless.  (Therefore my mission,   which I serve humbly and feel so honored to work with the youth of the church who are out here in the trenches. )

For me, faith in Jesus Christ our Savior has been a lifesaver,  and knowing our Father in Heaven has a larger plan.  He has not abandoned us, and yes, miracles still do happen. If we don´t see them right away, or are even angry for a while, God understands that, (and it is an important step in grieving).

My prayer for you this week, is that, as we experience devastation personally, or around us, and perhaps even dodge the bullet, temporarily,—- that we  do prepare, temporally, emotionally, and spiritually by developing a personal relationship with our Savior, knowing that His Mercy is sufficient to comfort us,  He suffered for us, so that we could return to our Father in Heaven, and each other, in love.  That is the one secure thing.   All that is asked of us, is a broken heart and a contrite spirit.  The price is already paid.

D & C 84:88  And, whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face, I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

I so testify…

Hermana George

“I know why I am here. “

Listening to a sweet sister missionary and helping her sort out feelings and find compassion and forgiveness for self.

Speaking with a discouraged elder who is homesick, and has trouble with depression.  Attending the temple and experiencing how sacred and special it is to those missionaries who come from such a distance.

Conferencing call’s with mission presidents who are heartsick because they have done “all they can possibly do – to keep a missionary in the field, who has given up and yet doesn’t want to disappoint his family.  Or who needs escorted home for safety sake.

Helping a nurse missionary sort out if an illness is real or feigned, and keep integrity and trust intact.

Offering advice to a missionary who feels suicidal and not thinking clearly, needs counseling and medication– determining at what point he is to stay or return home for the help he needs.

Teaching breathing exercises and muscle relaxation, warning missionaries not to be self crucial or compare themselves to others but to share their talents & love.

Studying Spanish daily and trying to communicate with new elders and sister missionaries who just arrived awestruck,  from small Latino  towns throughout Central America and sing sis by side with tall blond gringos from the states!

Listening to the talks and prayers each Sunday as North American missionaries struggle to speak in Spanish – and, realizing “I can finally understand much of what they are saying”. Reading the English and Spanish Book of Mormon side by side and putting together sentences that almost make sense!

Reading and getting closer to my Savior daily and realizing my many blessings, and how spoiled I am.  And how insignificant “things” are when dealing with people lives and teachings of God’s eternal plan of the Restored gospel.

Teaching mental health and dealing with stress so hopefully when the going gets tough, they will have some skills to use in the field.

Hearing myself Bear my testimony to a downtrodden missionary who walks miles daily and is asking how to sleep at night, or some tips on gaining the self confidence he needs to tract, and to teach by the spirit, allowing el Espiritu Santos. To put words in his mouth and touch his investigators heart with his love and charity.

Listening to and watching  over 143 new missionaries in the MTC sing together & study for hours, teach each other and share their individual stories of non-member parents, or struggling families and how much they love the Lord to sacrifice and spend these 2 years for their Savior Jesus Christ.  Knowing home will never be the same—

Learning to love my Savior even more daily and watching small miracles work in the lives of these young bright eyed, yet humble young 18-19 year old men and women in the trenches, and imagining the strength they will be in a few years – as a new young father or mother!

Yes, I know why I am here ! There is no place I would rather be.   it’s about sharing my strength,  and helping missionaries  serve  the wonderful Latino  peoples of Central America. &   Helping build the kingdom of God in this dispensation.

Read. D & C 84:88

I have no doubt–angels and our ancestors buoy us up and protect us.  Loving families back home supply prayers and encouragement.   Heavenly Father is always there. We just have to remember to ask and believe His promises, then take Him at His word.  He loves us and wants us back home someday.

¨Christ´s Atonement and His Grace in our Lives¨

  • Have you been saved by Grace?

Dear ones,  I have been thinking more about our Savior this week, and His great love for each of us, and the desire to have us again in His fold.. here are some thoughts I want to share with you about Grace.. I am so thankful for His sacrifice and atonement..  it works!

“Some folks are so excited about being saved that maybe they are not thinking enough about what comes next. They are so happy the debt is paid that they may not have considered why the debt existed in the first place.   Latter-day Saints teach,  not only what Jesus has saved us from but also what He has saved us for.     As I do counseling and talk on the phone with missionaries that sometimes feel discouraged or unworthy, I am more convinced that we have to keep trying and feeling the Love of Christ to buoy us up. and not allow Satan to discourage us or give up..

“A life impacted by grace eventually begins to look like Christ’s life.” As  Omar Canals puts it, “While many Christians view Christ’s suffering as only a huge favor He did for us, Latter-day Saints also recognize it as a huge investment He made in us.” As Moroni puts it, grace isn’t just about being saved. It is also about becoming like the Savior (see Moroni 7:48). The miracle of the Atonement is not just that we can live after we die but that we can live more abundantly (see John 10:10). The miracle of the Atonement is not just that we can be cleansed and consoled but that we can be transformed (see Romans 8). Scriptures make it clear that no unclean thing can dwell with God (see Alma 40:26), but, brothers and sisters, no unchanged thing will even want to.

Elder Bruce C. Hafen has written, “The Savior’s gift of grace to us is not necessarily limited in time to ‘after’ all we can do. We may receive his grace before, during and after the time when we expend our own efforts” (The Broken Heart [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1989], 155)

. So grace is not a booster engine that kicks in once our fuel supply is exhausted. Rather, it is our constant energy source. It is not the light at the end of the tunnel but the light that moves us through the tunnel. Grace is not achieved somewhere down the road. It is received right here and right now. It is not a finishing touch; it is the Finisher’s touch (see Hebrews 12:2).

My prayer for you this week is that you may feel His loving Grace and atonement working personally in small ways, in your life..   Love,     Hermana  George

 K’iche  is a Mayan language

As usual I got roped into singing.  But this time learning “I am a child of God in K’iche or Quiche as some spell it.  There are several dialects remaining .  Here are a couple lines beginning the song. Laa’ in jun Ray Lal li Dios . Ut xin ix taq la a rin.  Kix k’e Lin na’ ut …. it involves some clicking sounds difficult to maneuver but is muy Bonita!!

I consider it special to sing with this missionary group. Once in a while.

Sad week this last week as a couple elders and ins hermana needed to return home for.counseling and medications.  Missions can. be more stressful than one realizes.  I recommend having a semester at college or some time away from home doing your own laundry. Cooking a little for yourself. No cold cereal does not count.  Dehydration  and constipation make many missionaries miserable and slow progress so increase your vegetable and fruits!

Take care of homesickness prior to leaving by crying together, saying your goodbyes and settings long term goals. That goes for mom and dad and that little brother or sis as well.

Many fruits and vegetables are sold locally pineapple, papyaya sooo sweet.  Avocados. Limes. Mangos &. sweet juice drinks are very popular here. .

People ride buses for job in the. It’s sometimes 2 hours each way.  The bustle of the city is palpable.  I would want to drive here. Very Few traffic laws are enforced .
